For the most part, I like to think of myself as a ray of sunshine. But unfortunately, when the days get shorter and the weather gets colder and the sun starts hiding, my own personal sunshine sometimes starts to hide, too.
Long story short, I don’t fare well in the winter.
In case you’re wondering, my list of things I like the least in life looks a little something like this: Being cold, chapped lips, winter, and sleet. This will be my 22nd winter, so I’ve learned to be a trooper and handle the cold and its negative effects a bit better, but I’m still always looking for new ways to survive the cold season.
For all of my fellow summer-lovers out there gearing up for the winter, here are my survival tips for you.
Winter Skincare
For the entirety of my life, I’ve gotten irritating red bumps on my thighs every year transitioning from shorts to jean weather. They don’t itch or hurt, they’re just unsightly, and during my teenage years were a bit embarrassing, too. I never really knew what they were until college, and my roommate told me about Keratosis Pilaris which is essentially dry, bumpy skin. Having a name for my red bumps didn’t make them go away, but it was reassuring to know that I wasn’t alone in my bumpy fate. In addition to the KP bumps all over my thighs, the winter dries out my skin altogether, as it does for many people which results in tight, itchy skin.
Dealing with Keratosis Pilaris in the winter
This year I was able to try AmLactin’s Alpha-Hydroxy Skin Care as the warm weather faded away, and I’ve been so impressed with the results. Usually, by this time of year my thighs would have a mild break out of KP that intensifies as the winter goes on, but now: nothing.
I’ve been using AmLactin’s Alpha-Hydroxy Therapy Moisturizing Body Lotion mostly every day for a little over a month now and have been so pleased with the quality of my skin. The AmLactin Moisturizing Body Lotion has 12% lactic acid and is pH-balanced for the skin. The formula encourages natural skin renewal through exfoliation and offers long-lasting moisture retention.

Dealing with dry skin in the winter
My skin gets most dry on my hands, feet, elbows, knees, and face. For my dry skin on my body, AmLactin also has other great products in their line like their Hydrating Body Cream and Foot Cream, both of which exfoliate and soften dry areas. The Hydrating Body Cream is clinically proven to intensely hydrate for long-lasting moisture. I mostly use this on my elbows and knees – AmLactin products aren’t meant to be used on the face because of their exfoliating properties, otherwise you
The Hydrating Body Cream is clinically proven to intensely hydrate for long-lasting moisture. I mostly use this on my elbows and knees – AmLactin products aren’t meant to be used on the face because of their exfoliating properties, otherwise you know I’d be using it to treat my dry T-Zone. Their Foot Cream (which I surprised myself by loving – I usually don’t like lotions anywhere near my feet) has a triple action formula with alpha-hydroxy therapy that promotes natural skin cell renewal through exfoliation.

Dealing with dry facial skin in the winter
Like I said, you shouldn’t use AmLactin products on your face, so I’ll be sticking with my usual routine this year. If you suffer from terribly dry facial skin in the winter, oils might just be your best friend. Personally, I love coconut oil in the winter, and have recently incorporated Rose Hip oil into my routine, too. If you’re going to use oils, though, I’d spot test before slathering your face because I do know some people break out with any oil.
Dealing with dry lips in the winter
Or year round, if you’re anything like me. I think severely chapped lips are my least favorite thing about the cold weather, and I still haven’t found the perfect solution yet (help a girl out in the comments?)/ But what I do to minimize the pain and cracking is apply rosebalm like it’s my job. A lot of chapsticks are strategically formulated to feel good while they’re on, but they actually make your lips worse in the long run so you’ll keep reapplying and keep buying more, so I stick to the basics.
Dealing with dry hair in the winter
Again, I recommend coconut oil. Soaking your hair for an hour or so and then washing it out will make you feel like you’ve got an entire new head of hair. Justs be careful to do a good job rinsing, because coconut oil can be a little stubborn. Also! If you’re going to be out in the cold and the wind, consider wearing your hair in a braid or bun and wearing a hat or head wrap. AmLactin Giveaway!
