Thanks Slickdeals for partnering with me on this post!
Scholarships are so many students’ bread and butter when it comes to paying for school. I know I applied for about one hundred my senior year of high school – and for some pretty weird ones, too! Did you know that there is a scholarship for tall people?
Every evening I spent scouring the internet looking for new scholarships to apply for, and every night I would try and pump out an essay or two.
Applying for scholarships is a lot of work, but you can reap a great reward. It seems every single year I see stories floating around of students who earned up to $100,000 in scholarships. While I wasn’t that lucky, I don’t think anyone can blame me for trying!
What I’m getting at, is I’m a huge advocate in looking for scholarships – because they can really add up!
As a savvy internet user, you’ve probably heard of the website Slickdeals by now, but what you might not know is that they have an incredible student portal and they are giving two students the chance to win a $5000 for the fall semester!
Finalists will be listed on Slickdeals where the public can vote, so if any of you apply let me know so I can cast my vote for you, I’d love to see one of my readers win!
While you’re checking out the student portal, I really recommend poking around a bit. There are also internship opportunities for those of you interested in business development, engineering or marketing; and they have the ultimate list of student discounts, too!
Ok, lets get real. Unfortunately you’re not the only one applying for these scholarships (but wouldn’t that be great!) so if you want to win, you’re going to need to stand out in a good way. As someone who writes for a living, I thought I could share a few tips:
- Have a snappy introduction. This is where you are going to be getting the judge’s attention – by this point they’re probably sick of rhetorical questions, and are up to their ears in statistics. If you have an awesome anecdote to share that will really draw your judge in – you’ll be golden!
- Follow the requirements – exactly. If the word requirement is 500, don’t skimp at 450. And if you’re supposed to write about something specific – stay on topic! It’s easy to go off on tangents and lose focus, but that will come back to bite you!
- Be organized – if you know me, then you know that I never outline anything but you’d better bet that I meticulously outlined every application to make sure that I was answering the essay question exactly and that my essay flowed well.
- Don’t be afraid to start over. There was one fairly large scholarship I applied to (spoiler: I didn’t get it) and I think I wrote the essay five times. I really thought I had a shot so I wanted it to be perfect.
I really hope you consider applying for the Slickdeals scholarship and I really really hope that one of you wins! In addition to letting me know if you’re going to apply, I’d love to hear your tips and tricks for applying to scholarships! And if you ever got an amazing scholarship – tell me about it below!
