October Income Report – Make Money Blogging!

I’ve been looking forward to November for quite some time now: November brings new adventures (I’m travelling twice!), a much needed break from school come Thanksgiving, and another income report! You all know the spiel by now: I’m not doing this to brag,  I write these to teach and inspire. I make money blogging, and you can, too.

You don’t need a crazy amount of traffic, a crazy amount of time, or a crazy amount insider secrets to make money blogging and I’m proof of that. My traffic has been going down (yikes!) yet my income (before expenses) is continuing to grow. I am a full time student and it’s a good day if I can spend more than an hour blogging (I’m not spending hours a day working at this!) and I am 100% self taught. Before spending a penny on courses or consultations I hit 500,000 monthly views and over $2,000 in monthly income. Now that I’ve reached those benchmarks (even if they aren’t consistent!) I am creating a course (ready for launch in January 2016!) that is going to spell out step by step how you can start bringing in great money from your blog.

This month there was a big focus on house-keeping. I am a bit embarrassed to say that all of my first posts were still up, loud and proud in all of their unrefined glory. I’ve gone back and polished the formatting up, made decent graphics for them, and did some cross linking to relevant posts. I got through about 20 posts in October, and I have about 15 more on my to-do list. You never know what post is going to be the first one that someone sees on your blog, so you want to make sure that every post is the same quality as your current ones and that readers are going to want to see more.

While last month’s project didn’t do much in boosting traffic, it did a lot in bringing down my bounce rate. September’s bounce rate was over 50%, and in October that figure was down to 38%. I know that it can’t all be credited to the polishing of old posts, but it certainly didn’t hurt.

Another thing I made it my mission to do was put out a few more thought-provoking and well thought out posts. I’ve fallen into the hole of fashion blogging in the past – and it’s  easy – but not always the most helpful.  While I love fashion blogging (and have all of the respect for it!), I do want to limit my fashion posts to one a week from here on out and instead focus on writing posts to inspire and teach rather than just publishing lots of pretty pictures.

To give you an idea of the content you can expect from here on out, these are a few of the posts I was most proud of this month:

Those three posts each took me significantly more time than others I wrote this month, and they are either thought-provoking or ridiculously helpful. And that is something I really want people to think of me as – ridiculously helpful. Unfortunately I don’t have time to be pumping out 5 super informative posts each week, but from here on out I will be publishing one weekly at the very least.

I also spent some time filming YouTube videos so I could have a backlog for my YouTube Channel’s relaunch on November 4th. I want to dive back into YouTube (for real this time) so I came up with a plant, a calendar, and a newly lit fire!

TapInfluence – $800
BlogHer Sponsored Posts – $600
Host Gator (from this post, where I show YOU how to make a blog!) – $375
BlogHer Ads -$156.08
Amazon Affiliates – $7.83
YouTube – $2.39
Total: 1941.30

Blogging Class – $159
Facebook Ads – $25
Adobe Lightroom – $10.61
Hosting – $6.83
Total: $201.44

Grand Total: $1739.86! So this is lower than last months, but that’s because I had a sponsored post get pushed back until November so it’s still a win for me (and it would have been a record breaking month if I could have published on time!) As usual I calculated how many hours I would have had to work at a minimum wage job to make the same income, and I would have had to work for 211 hours. That breaks down to A little over 52 hours a week or 7 hours a day – something I wouldn’t be able to do with a college schedule. I say it time and time again, but starting a blog is the best thing I’ve ever done for myself and I’ve fallen in love with self-employment and the opportunities that come along with it.

Yes! If you are interested in making a profitable blog – I would be more than happy to help! I have an incredibly detailed guide to setting up a blog here, and from there you can check out my blogging tips (there are a lot!) and my Blogging FAQ! If you need any further help – email me! I absolutely love talking about blogging (my friends and family are sick of hearing about it!) so do not hesitate, I sure that I can help you figure out a strategy so you can make money blogging!

The process is simple, and we won’t even have to work with each other’s busy schedules to set up a Skype call because it will all be through Google Docs and email. Here’s how it’ll go:

  • I’ll send the winner a worksheet to fill out. (Very simple – just asking about you, your site, and your goals!)
  • I’ll evaluate that worksheet, your site, and your social media and come up with a strategy just for you, personalized to your goals (growing traffic, making money, rocking Pinterest, etc.)
  • After sending you the very detailed plan of attack, I’ll be checking back in with you after 2 weeks to see how it’s going. If you haven’t seen growth, we’ll reevaluate!
