May Income Report

I am back with another Income Report! These posts are really fun for me to write because I am able to share my best advice with you, all while analyzing my revenue and traffic streams from the previous months so I can start coming up with a plan of attack for the month ahead!

Why do I do an income report?

I know it might come off as a bit strange to do income reports to people outside of the blogging worldd, but let me tell you why I like to do them:

  1. Transparency – there are a lot of ways to make money as a blogger – some honest, some not so much. I want to be completely transparent with you all to show you all exactly where I am making my money from and to assure you that I’m not pulling any funny business!
  2.  Growth Tracking – I have been publishing these since October, when I made $343 (though I made my first $40 in June!) and I’ve had so much fun keeping up with them every month. It’s definitely interesting to see how things are changing and where my income is really coming from.
  3. They are fun – when I first started realizing that you could monetize a blog, I was constantly checking out other bloggers’ reports and getting inspired. If you’re not a blogger these posts might not be your cup of tea, but blogger to blogger – I want to help open your eyes to the potential that your little slice of the internet has! My blog has grown quite a bit since I’ve started – but even if you aren’t getting massive traffic you can still make money!

Every month I break down how I am making money from my blog and how you can do the same! Check out my latest post where I lay it all out and explain exactly where my money is coming from!

What I did this month.

May was a very busy month – between finals and moving home I was under a lot of stress. Despite that I worked really hard on not letting my blog fall to the wayside. I spent a lot of late nights working on posts and promoting on social media, and it paid off! I saw my highest traffic ever and I also broke an income record!

I didn’t meet my monthly goal of 15 posts (I only published 13 times!) but the posts that I did publish were really high quality so it made up for it.

I also spent more time focused on social media and promoting my posts, and that really paid off. I have mentioned before how I am trying to be less dependent on Pinterest for traffic, so I’m investing time in other social medias. I was happy to see that Pinterest only accounted for 60% of my traffic! I’m still hoping to get that under 50, but I’m fine with the baby steps!

I went back and optimized the SEO on a few old posts, and my Google referral rate went from just 3% to almost 15%! I would love to see that number continue to grow, because search engines are the most reliable source of consistent traffic. Social media changes algorithms so often that they really can’t be trusted, but Google is pretty straightforward.

The Grand Total.

After taking out the expenses, my total income for the month of May comes to $1121.47! This is a new record for me, and the first time that I broke $1000! My goal was to start making $1000 a month by the time I am back to school to help pay for utilities and groceries in my new apartment, so I am super excited! Though I will say that any blogger can agree that income can be super unstable in the blogosphere so who knows what next month will bring! But for this month – I’m thrilled!

As always, I calculated out how many hours I would have to work at minimum wage to earn this much, and I came to a total of 136 hours, or 34 hours a week! This is the first time that I can say with confidence that I did not spend that much time on my blog, so I can celebrate the fact that running this blog is officially more profitable than having a ‘real’ job! And that’s pretty cool.

May Traffic.

May was a month of meeting goals and breaking records! I got almost 50,000 more views in the month of May than I did in the month of April, and I’m so thrilled! When I passed the 300,000 mark with a few days to spare I was so excited! I just wanted to thank all of you for reading my blog and supporting me and allowing me to get to where I am. It couldn’t be done without you and I am so appreciative!
