Everything I Bought When I Moved Into My New Apartment

If you haven’t been following along on Instagram, you might not know that I moved over the weekend! After moving back to Illinois after living in New York, I settled back with my parents while my savings account recovered from NYC. As great and comfortable as living at home was, at 22 I thought it was time to venture out.

I’m in the downtown area of my hometown (right across the street from my favorite restaurant in the world!) and living in a one bedroom (that’s about 3x the size and 1/3 of the price of my old New York apartment.)

I moved in Friday, and it was completely unfurnished and I was starting from scratch coming up with furnishings and living essentials.

If you’re ever in my shoes and moving into a brand new place, you might be stuck wondering what you need and I thought this little guide could help point you in the right direction.

This post included pictures of my apartment before it was furnished, I’ll have a full apartment tour up once everything is in place and decorated!

What I already had:

  • A bed: My sweet grandparents let me take a spare bed they had from the old cabin the sold a few years back.
  • Decor: Most of what I bought was more “functional” than “fun” because I already had a ton of decor in storage from my college apartments, time in New York, and my bedroom at home.
  • Mugs: I’m a bit of a coffee mug hoarder so I had a box full upon move in.
  • A tea kettle: A necessity in my life.
  • Bedding: I took the bedding from my room at my parent’s because I love it!

What I bought:

I ordered 90% of my apartment gear from Amazon, I’ve linked to everything using my Amazon affiliate links so if you make a purchase I’ll earn a small commission at no extra charge to you.

Kitchen Gear

  • An under-the-sink trashcanGlamorous.
  • Trash bags. Mini-size to fit my mini trashcan.
  • A silverware tray. LPT, kids: measure your drawers before buying a silverware tray.
  • Airtight canisters. So I don’t have to deal with the mess the flour bag makes.
  • A 25 Piece Kitchen Set. One of my favorite purchases on this entire list.
  • 5 Piece Mixing Bowl Set with Pastel Lids. My absolute favorite purchase on this entire list.
  • A 20 Piece Flatware Set. This only arrived today, in the meantime I ate with ladles and spatulas.
  • Barstools. The black were sold out when I bought them, so I’ll have a bit of a spray painting project to embark on.
  • An Instant Pot. This nifty pressure cooker will change your cooking game, it’s the bomb.
  • A French Press. To help me feel fancy in the mornings.
  • Stemless Wine Glasses. I don’t drink, but they’re the prettiest glassware that Amazon had to offer.
  • A Bakeware Set. With more pieces than I could possibly actually need.
  • A Flatware Set. I got it off of Hautelook and it’s no longer available.
  • Kitchen Knives. Same deal, got it off Hautelook and the deal has expired.

    I still need to buy:

  • Pots and pans
  • Dishwasher pods
  • An ice cube tray
  • A vacuum

Living Room Gear

  • Fairy lights. I love these copper ones with tiny bulbs! They look more sophisticated and intentional than bulky holiday lights.
  • A desk. I love the hairpin legs and I put it together in 5 minutes flat.
  • Himalayan Salt CandlesBecause my brother stole my Himalayan salt lamp. (But then he helped me move in, so we’re even.)
  • Floor protectorsSo I get my security deposit back.
  • A Burrow Couch. (I’m actually working with them on a fun collaboration!)

    I still need to buy:

  • A table for the TV
  • A side table (I’ve been thrifting hard looking for the perfect one!)
  • An area rug

Bathroom Gear

  • A toilet brush. Again, glamorous.
  • A shower curtain. But not the pretty one, I still don’t know how to decorate my bathroom.
  • Shower curtain rings. To hang the shower curtain.

    I still need to buy:

  • The outer shower curtain
  • A toothbrush holder
  • An organizational system for my under-the-sink cupboard
  • A bathmat

Bedroom Gear

Lucky me, I already owned just about everything in my bedroom! My grandparents gave me an old bed, and everything else came from my room at my parents’ house!

I still need to buy:

  • A dresser, another thing I’m hoping to thrift!
  • A set of bedside tables

Whew! It’s been an expensive weekend.

I know this isn’t the most dazzling or exciting post, but it’s real. It’s hard to know what you’re going to need when you move, and thinking about the little things is near impossible when you’re already stressing about the logistics of how you’re going to get all of your stuff up into your place, what it’s going to be like living alone, and so on.

I’m only a weekend in and sure I’ve probably still forgotten some things. Any recommendations for what I should add onto my “still need to buy” list?
