This year I have been pretty good about going to the gym – on the good weeks it’s been almost everyday, and I never miss Mondays because I just go after bellydance since I’m there anyways. But now that it’s getting colder I can already feel motivation waning. I hate having to pile on the layers just to go to the gym where I am going to have to peel all the layers off before working out. Call me lazy (because that is definitely the case more often than not), but all of the work that goes into going to the gym in the winter just doesn’t seem worth it to me!
But at the same time I still want to stay strong and healthy, all while indulging my lazy tendencies.
With that said, when this same conundrum befell me last winter I had to figure out a good workout regime, and I found one that I actually really like. It lacks all of the fancy weights and machines I’m used to at the gym but it’s a lot more fun!
I’ve only ever taken a few actual yoga classes but I still try my hand at yoga to get a good stretch and increase my balance and strength at the same time. I usually go to Pinterest to find sequences, but sometimes I look up videos, too! While I know I’m probably not as graceful as I feel when I’m doing yoga, it is still empowering and I have definitely noticed increased flexibility and balance. I can do cool headstand poses now!
I’m sure most of you have heard of Blogilates by now, but if you haven’t you need to check it out! They are pilates videos made my fitness smartie, Cassey Ho. These videos are honestly the most effective workout I’ve ever done. Doing pilates tones my body so much quicker than anything else and it’s a lot more fun than any other workout!
If you don’t like working out, then you might be able to make an exception for these videos! Cassey is so upbeat and encouraging it’s really easy to follow, and she often gives alternate moves for beginners.
Even if I’m not doing any other workout, I really love to stretch for just five or ten minutes when I wake up. I mostly like to do it because it helps me wake up, because I am not a morning person, but it’s also just a good habit to have!
I hesitate to use the word “diet”, but it’s the best I could think of at the moment. I just like to eat healthily and avoid a bunch of snacks. When you are trying to eat a healthy diet it’s so important to make sure that you’re not depriving yourself. Eat what you want, but if it’s “unhealthy” then just make sure you practice moderation!
- Make half of your plate green at dinner! Veggies are very important (and delicious!)
- Don’t keep a ton of snacks in your room – a few sweets for when you really need them, but mostly healthier snacks!
- Stay hydrated! It’s easy to forget to drink enough water when you’re not sweating in the heat of summer!
It can be hard to stay healthy in the winter – but it is so important! Remember – making health conscious choices is important for some many reasons beyond how you look! Treat your body well so it treats you well in return!
