In the last few weeks I’ve been getting a true taste of self-employment. For the first time in my life I’m not in school and so there is no automatic structure to my life. Rather than following a set schedule I have been making my own rules, and that’s something that can be really dangerous.
It would be so easy to fall into a cycle of laziness and Netflix binges, which are usually paired with bad decisions elsewhere (namely sleep and diet.) I didn’t realize how hard it would be to take care of myself while doing the self-employment thing full time, but so far I’ve been doing well with some rules and scheduling I put in place.
Because taking care of yourself is tricky while self-employed, I thought that I would share the tips I’m following to keep myself in check!
Stick to a schedule.
Structuring your day is so important. Yes, you have the freedom to do what you want when you want, but without structure this can start to be a bad thing. If you’re constantly flying by the seat of your pants and just hoping for the best eventually you are going to get behind. Every day I work from after dinner (usually around 6) until 11 at night.
I’m a night owl and that’s what works for me, working into the night might not be ideal for some people, but just pick a time to work and stick with it. I’ve been conditioned to work at night, and now as I’m putting away my dishes, my mind is already starting to map out what needs to get done.
Take care of yourself.
One thing I’ve realized is that when my online business is my only obligation it’s easy to turn into a workaholic. Now, that’s not inherently a bad thing (I really enjoy working!) but you just need to focus on striking a balance and making sure what you’re doing is best for you.
For me, this means getting enough sleep and focusing on eating healthy. I’ve been working on a consistent sleep schedule, and I’ve recently found my new favorite healthy snack.
I have been trying to shake my chips and salsa habit, and was able to try the entire line of Sunsweet Philippine Tropicals, amazing dried fruit pieces that are sourced from unique microclimates with ideal growing conditions. My favorite is the Thai Coconut Chip because I love it’s crunch, but all four are amazing!
The other three flavors are chewy and delicious, and all of them are great for keeping at your workplace and snacking!
I love the term ‘goal-digger’ and it’s something that I think everyone should strive to be. Having clearly defined goals (be specific!) really gives you something to push for, and they keep you focused.
If you know what you want you will start planning and plotting how you can get there. I recommend setting lofty long term goals along with smaller goals building up to your main one.
I’m willing to put money in saying that any truly successful entrepreneur is pretty organized. If you’ve been around here before you know that there is a big place in my heart for planners, and I recently raided Target’s dollar aisle and found a ton of new organizational supplies.
Organizing can mean making to do lists, scheduling out your week, filling out a planner, or any other action to help get your life and business in order.
Find a tribe.
Having like minded people you can talk to goes a long way in keeping your sanity during self-employment. Whenever I’m feeling overwhelmed or hopeless about my business, I’ve got a pack of awesome ladies ready to give me a pep talk, and I am there to do the same for them.
If you’re a one man operation, things can get a bit lonely. But adopt a community over competition attitude and start reaching out to other bosses in your niche or focus and work at building each other up!
Take a vacation.
Ok, here’s the exciting part! Hustling your buns off for months on end is enough to drive someone a bit mad; take care of yourself by taking a vacation or even a staycation.
