In seventh grade I didn’t have many friends at all, but at volleyball try outs I met someone who ended up not only being my best friend, but someone that I’ve been able to look up to since day one. Jennifer and I had a lot in common in that we were both quiet, nice girls who were hurting for friends. Me because I had a rough elementary school experience, and her because she had just moved to Illinois all the way from Texas. Being friends with Jennifer shaped me in so many wonderful ways, and I just wanted to share what makes my best friends so incredible. So maybe her humble side will kill me for writing this, but I just need to brag on her behalf- because my best friend is pretty incredible. Jennifer is so smart and so driven. I have always been so amazed at how hard she works in order to succeed – and succeed she does. Jennifer graduated number one in our class, and now she is off doing great things in Texas studying to be a doctor.
If I were in her shoes I would have been terrified to go off to a school so far away from anyone that I knew – but of course, being Jennifer, she’s planted her roots and flourished. Being friends with Jennifer has taught me to be brave and to be confident and seek adventure. The first adventure being flying down to Texas alone to visit her this past summer! Finally Jennifer is so comfortable with herself – back when I was a self-conscious middle-schooler she didn’t seem to care what people thought and she would be her fun, goofy self. I didn’t find enough comfort in myself to be 100% authentic until high school, but I am certain that being friends with Jennifer sped that process along.
