January Income Report!

Hello everybody! I am back with my latest income report so that I can hold myself accountable and tell you all how I am making money off of my blog! I have been publishing these since October, when I made $343 and I’ve had so much fun keeping up with them every month. It’s definitely interesting to see how things are changing and where my income is really coming from.

Check out how I managed to make almost $500 dollars blogging in the month of January!

What I did in January:

Lately I have been trying to diversify my traffic. Over 90% of my visitors are coming from Pinterest, which is fantastic, but it also gives me anxiety. What if Pinterest changes their algorithms? What if my account gets deleted? What if . What if. What if.

So I really focused on getting traffic from other places, and had (mild) success. As you can see below, I was so close to getting under 90% for Pinterest referral (in the future I hope to have it only be 20-30%! But I’m taking baby steps! I had some luck with StumbleUpon and Facebook this month, and managed to get some traffic from there. And honorable mentions go out to Tumblr and Bloglovin.

By focusing on other channels I am not putting all of my eggs in one basket. Yes Pinterest is super good to me, but I don’t want to have to rely on Pinterest being successful in order for the blog to be successful.

Most of the work I put into my blog was behind the scenes this month, trying to grow a larger following on social media so I can start getting more diverse traffic.

January Income:

Clever Girls Collective – $175
HostGator Affiliate – $250
BlogHer – $69.01
Amazon Affiliate: $15.07
Google Adsense: $2.81

Total – 511.89

Hosting – $6.83
One Year Giveaway – $25.00

Total – 31.83

After taking out expenses, my grand total for the month of January was $480.06!

I did a bit of math to find out that would be equivalent to working a little over 58 hours at a minimum wage job in the month of January, or about 15 hours a week! I do put more time than that into my blog usually, but I do it from the comfort of my dorm room where I am able to take breaks at my own will, multitask, and work in my pajamas, so I think that it’s a good trade off!

January actually brought record breaking traffic, which was so incredibly exciting for me! For the first time ever, I broke 200,000 monthly pageviews, and that was such a good feeling! I am sure this as a result of what I mentioned above about diversifying traffic sources, so it’s something that I definitely want to continue!

February’s Plan of Attack.

February is going to be my most stressful blogging month ever. Due to a few posts being postponed and a few being unclear on deadlines I found out that I will be posting a lot more sponsored posts than I would like in February. Of course I am thrilled to be given the opportunity to work with such fantastic companies, I just wish they were a bit more spread apart!

Because of my packed schedule, I won’t be able to focus on some things that I would like to, but once the craziness of that subsides, I am eager to get on track and continue growing my social media numbers and diversifying my traffic.

Can you make money blogging?

Yes! If you are interested in making a profitable blog – I would be more than happy to help! I have an incredibly detailed guide to setting up a blog here, and from there you can check out my blogging tips (there are a lot!) and if you need any further help – email me! I absolutely love talking about blogging (my friends and family are sick of hearing about it!) so do not hesitate.

  • This is amazing Morgan! I’ve been thinking about monetizing my site but I only get around like 1500 pageviews a month, althought to me it feels like a million lol. However, I know a lot of ad services require more. I think it’s great you’re trying to get more traffic from other sources aside from pinterest. The majority of my traffic come from there as well and it scares me also for the same reasons. It would be awesome if you did a post on growing your social media following….I seriously lack in that area -.- Thanks so much for taking the time to share these posts on blogging, it’s truly helpful!

    • That’s amazing, though! Once you break 1,000 monthly views, it seems you grow a lot faster!

Yeah, Pinterest scares me a bit! Now that they are doing things like sponsored pins and everything, I’m afraid they are going to turn into Facebook, who’ll only show your content if you pay!

And that is a fantastic idea, I will add that to my editorial calendar. Expect to see it in the next ten days or so!! 🙂 Social media is hard, I’m still trying to figure it out, but I can do a post on what I do know!

  • I love reading this, Morgan! Right now I am just primarily focusing on getting posts up, as I seemed to have slacked in that area, and commenting on other blogs to get my name out there. Baby steps to get somewhere has been what I go by lately because sometimes I allow my perfectionist, Type-A personality to get way too in the way. I want writing posts to be fun, not a chore, I’m doing it as my stress relief at the moment because I LOVE writing and photography. Always love seeing your income reports and I love how you go so in depth about the things too. 🙂

    • Baby steps are exactly what you need to do! Great plan!! It’s so hard to get your name out there, but you’re a fantastic blogger and I can’t wait to see big things from you very very soon!

Blogging is such a great stress relief, whenever blogging is the thing that is stressing me out, I have to take a step back and see why that is – I never ever want this to feel like work!

Thank you so much for your comment, Megan!

Congratulations, Morgan!! This is super inspiring, even though I’m just starting to blog. It makes me think about where I could be in a year!! This is honestly amazing, and I really hope to make it as far as you have one day 🙂

    • Thank you so much, Mary! And I hope to see you here in a year, for sure! Just keep at it, I know you’ll get there! 🙂

  • I love that you want to diversify your traffic! I think that is a great goal, AND one that you’ll be able to track and grow from. I am in awe by how much traffic you get from Pinterest. I still get hardly any! Show me your ways, master!

    • Thanks, Elizabeth! You, Meg, and I need another blog date very very soon and we can talk Pinterest strategy!

  • I love this! It is so inspiring to see bloggers doing well. I am so intimidated by the sheer idea of trying to monetize my blog but, am a broke chick wanting some money ha. I second what @ejmaske:disqus said! Show us your Pinterest ways! I lived on Pinterest for the better part of 2012-2014 ha and need to get gung ho about it again. When did you start trying to monetize your blog? I have had my blog for a teeny bit more than a month and have somewhere between 3000-4000 views(the analytics I use are so conflicting). I have no friggen clue what is a good number and am worried about jumping into monetizing when my numbers aren’t that great. I have Google Adsense and am working on Amazon Affiliates and possibly Host Gator, but so far income=diddly squat.

    • You will get there, I promise! It just takes a bit of time! And I started to monetize back in June, June 28th to be exact! And that was exactly five months after I started blogging.

For me once the ball got rolling after I did my first sponsored post. I went from making about 2 dollars in a month into making 50 the next month and it’s just kept growing. So it’s hard to get started, but once you do it happens quickly!
