My path in life hasn’t always had a pin-pointed direction, but I’ve always known the general aim: Whatever I end up doing I want to be able to do it with love and I want to help people. Different paths I’ve explored are teaching special education, becoming an occupational therapist, and becoming a speech therapist.
Right now my life is taking a bit of a detour as far as finding a long term career goes, but in the meantime I’ve been looking for ways to direct that energy elsewhere. At school I volunteered to teach swim lessons to kids and infants with special needs, and more than anything, my heart hurt over leaving them during my semester off. You see, my heart really belongs with the special needs community and working with them has brought me so much joy.
One of the first things I did when I made the final decision to stay home this semester was look into volunteer opportunities locally. The one that stood out to me more than anything else was Gigi’s Playhouse, an achievement center for people with Downs Syndrome, their families, and the community. They offer programs for all ages, as well as support groups for families. I will be going in for an orientation and tour with Gigi’s Playhouse soon, and in the meantime I’ve been thinking of different ways I could help make a difference within the organization. Beyond my prior experience and sign language skills, I have also been poking around looking for ways to help them get more funding, as similar local programs have shut down due to budget cuts.
The most exciting prospect was Create the Good‘s new initiative called the Create the Good Dream Builder Video Contest where you can create a short video (60 seconds or less!) talking about a cause your passionate about. I created a video talking about why I think Gigi’s Playhouse is so great, and I really want to see all of you enter, too!
You have until February seventh to enter, and the winning video will win $2,500 to their favorite charity. Even if you don’t win the grand prize, three runner ups will be getting $500 for the charity of their choice! Winners are chosen by community votes, so make sure when you enter you share your video on the Create the Good Facebook page, and send me a link so I can tweet it out! I want to see the incredible dreams you all have to make your community a better place!
Go forth and be amazing, friends!
