The Smart Girl’s Guide to Beauty from the Inside Out

The smart girl’s guide to beauty from the inside out

In the past few years I’ve become what a few of my friends may call a “hippie.” This mostly has to do with my transformation in diet and “save the world one reusable water bottle at a time” mentality.

One area of my life that I’ve really transformed is my health and beauty routine. I was a long distance runner growing up and worked at an ice cream shop. I’d run 40 miles a week and eat sundaes every day without worrying about gaining weight and I was blessed with great skin until I was 17. During that time I treated my body like a trash can and ate anything and everything that sounded good.

Now? I’m a bit more conscious and 80% of my beauty routine starts from the inside.

Beauty from the inside out

The first change I made was taking vitamins. One of my first ever blog posts 3 years ago (not going to link it because cringe) was about my long hair routine and I talked about my love for Nature’s Bounty Hair Skin & Nails Gummies. Today I’m throwing it back and partnering with Nature’s Bounty and reminding you of my old school beauty staple.

Nature’s Bounty® Hair, Skin & Nails sets the foundation to support your natural beauty from the inside and out* by providing the vital nutrients your body needs each day. They support lustrous hair, vibrant skin, and healthy nails* making these the perfect foundation to a healthy beauty routine.

What is your skin telling you?

The cause of most of the skin problems have been issues with my diet. I’m prone to inflammation, and before I was veg I’d have a few breakouts on my skin at all times. One of my best friends has Celiac, and she knows she’s accidentally eaten gluten if her jawline breaks out.

There is no one perfect diet that is going to work for everyone. A lot of refining your diet comes from trial and error and understanding your own body. Know that a strong beauty routine starts from what you’re putting in your body.

Eating for beauty

Avoiding the bad foods

The easiest thing you can do is to avoid the bad foods the best you can and treat yo’self in moderation. Like I said, everyone is going to have different “bad foods” and what doesn’t work for you may be perfectly fine for a friend.

I find that avoiding meat, dairy, BPA, and fried foods will keep my skin troubles at bay. For some people coffee and soda sabotage their beauty routine, but I can consume both with no problems.

Again, everyone is different.

Eat nutrient rich foods

It’s easy to get lazy and survive off of PB&J’s and tofu, but depriving your body of key nutrients will be apparent in both your energy levels and your skin.

Very few people eat a perfectly balanced and nutritionally distributed diet, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try.

The majority of your meal should be made up of vegetables and greens followed by fats and carbs. Proportioning your meals this way will make sure you’re getting full of of nutrients without depriving yourself of yummy carbs and fats.

You can’t go wrong eating a veggie-abundant diet as long as you’re eating enough.

Vitamins should supplement your nutrition, not replace it

First things first: vitamins should never be your end all be all to great health.

I take my Nature’s Bounty Hair, Skin, and Nails Gummies for their mix of vital nutrients. They include Biotin, Vitamin C and Vitamin E*, but I don’t expect the gummies to make up for a lack of nutrition in my diet.

Vitamins are a great addition to a healthy lifestyle, but taking vitamins won’t inherently make you healthy. (If only, amirite?!)

Take care of your body

Beyond taking care of your body through your diet, be considerate of the larger picture. Are you sleeping enough? How are your stress levels? If you want to look better and feel better you have to put yourself first sometimes.

I’m the queen of pulling late nights to get everything done (this whole being an adult thing is hard) so I’m guilty here, too, but making the decision to put your well being first will go a long way in your overall health.
